Hal Moore was never reluctant to share the same risks as the troops. Here are the citations for his Distinguished Service Cross and Bronze Star for Valor.
Note especially the Bronze Star citation and realize he was a Brigade Commander when he earned it. Clearly, he spent time at the tip of the spear with his troopers.
