Hal Moore earned 2 awards for the Bronze Star Medal for Valor. One was submitted as a Silver Star, but later downgraded to a Bronze Star.
Note that both were awarded for action while he was a staff officer. The first was when he was the S3 (Operations Officer) for the 17th Infantry Regiment, and the second was while serving on the G3 (Plans and Operations) staff of the 7th Infantry Division.
Unlike some staff officers, he spent time on the front, sensing the ebb and flow of the situation and sharing the risks with the troops.
